Example of Creative Fundraising: 81,734 Steps For Literacy

  1. I am hiking the Grand Canyon in May from rim-to-rim to raise awareness and funds for Vermont children's literacy. One of America's most difficult hikes. 38.7 arduous miles, which equals 81,734 of my steps. I am asking people to sponsor my steps. In the first 14 days of the campaign, 14,000 steps were sponsored! 2. Jack,
Good luck with your trip! Sounds like a great idea for innovative fundraising. Where'd you get the idea from?

  3. Thanks for your interest. In a sense it's a blend of "business" and pleasure. "Business": I work with at-risk children and know how crucial building their literacy levels is for their life success. It's absolutely that simple a correlation -- increased literacy equals increased success in life. "Pleasure": I'm an avid hiker. Attempting the Steps For Literacy Grand Canyon hike seemed a personal challenge worthy of the children's challenge.

It seems to resonate with the public also - 30,000 steps sponsored in the first 30 days! http://www.StepsForLiteracy.org.
